Dorchester possesses a sense of place, character, and heritage all its own. This is the homeland of Harriet Tubman, the most famous of Underground Railroad “conductors” who led dozens of enslaved people to freedom. Sharpshooter Annie Oakley lived here. And more Maryland governors hailed from these parts than any other place in Maryland besides Baltimore City.
Explore our long history as an agricultural and canning powerhouse, our boatbuilding and maritime heritage, our many historic churches and cemeteries, our quaint (and still in service) general stores, and our Native American culture. A range of self-guided walking tours, driving tours, river excursions, museums, and more let you experience the stories and history.
Much of the county has been designed as a state heritage area known as the Heart of Chesapeake Country. For more on the colorful heritage of Dorchester County, visit our sister site, www.TourChesapeakeCountry.org.
